A panel is a limit, not just a box of breakers
Every circuit in a building answers to the panel. It is where the power coming in gets split, sized and protected before it ever reaches an outlet or a light switch, and it sets a hard ceiling on how much a building can actually run at once. A panel that was right for a house forty years ago is often wrong for the same house today, once air conditioning, a second refrigerator and a garage full of tools have all been added onto circuits that were never sized to carry them. The panel itself does not complain. It just runs closer to its limit than anyone realizes, until something on it starts to.
What a full or aging panel actually looks like inside
Breakers packed edge to edge with no room left, a cover that is warm to the touch, discoloration around a breaker or a bus bar, or a panel that has been added to so many times the labeling no longer matches what is actually wired to what. None of that is dramatic on its own, which is exactly why it gets left alone for years. Worth a call: lights that dim when something large switches on, a breaker that will not reset and hold, or a panel you genuinely could not describe if asked what each circuit does.

Underground electrical
The service entrance decides what the panel is even allowed to do.
The panel gets most of the attention because it is the part anyone can open and look at, but the service entrance feeding it, whether that is an overhead drop or an underground run from the meter, sets the real ceiling on what the panel can deliver. A panel upgrade without a service entrance to match it is a bigger box with the same old limit behind it. We run that underground work the same way we run it for new construction: conductors sized and buried for the load that is actually going to sit on them, not just the load on the day they go in the ground.
When it is up a pole instead
Not every service problem is inside the building.
Some service and panel jobs start at the pole rather than the meter can, and that is where the bucket truck goes to work instead of a ladder. Between the underground run at ground level and the overhead reach of the truck, a service or panel upgrade gets covered from the point it leaves the line down to the last breaker in the box.
